Évora is a UNESCO World Heritage city and most visitors spend a day there, see the cathedral and the bone chapel, and move on. That is a reasonable use of a day. But the region around Évora has enough to fill a week without repeating yourself, and most of it is not in the guidebooks. Here is what we tell our guests.

The megalithic sites

The Alentejo has the highest concentration of megalithic monuments in the Iberian Peninsula. The Anta Grande do Zambujeiro, about twelve kilometres from Évora, is one of the largest dolmens in Europe and is almost always empty of other visitors. The Cromeleque dos Almendres, a stone circle older than Stonehenge, is better known but still quiet on weekday mornings. Tiago leads a day trip to both sites that includes context and stories you will not find on the information boards.

The cork oak forests

Cork harvesting happens every nine years, and if you are in the region in summer you may see it in progress. The harvested trunks are a vivid orange-red that fades over the following months. Walking through a cork forest in July, with the cicadas and the heat and the smell of the bark, is one of those experiences that is hard to describe and easy to remember. Our walking route cards include two routes through the forest.

The weekly market in Évora

The market runs on Tuesday mornings in the Rossio de São Brás, outside the old city walls. It is a real working market, not a tourist market. You will find vegetables, cheese, live chickens, second-hand tools, and the occasional piece of furniture. Tiago goes most weeks to buy for the kitchen. If you want to come with him, ask the evening before and he will take you.

Day trips further afield

Monsaraz is a walled village on a hill above the Alqueva reservoir, about an hour from Cricket Glen. It is small enough to walk in twenty minutes and beautiful enough to stay for three hours. The Alqueva reservoir itself is the largest artificial lake in Western Europe and has a dark-sky reserve status, which means the night sky is extraordinary. We can arrange a boat trip on the reservoir through a contact in Mourão.

Staying longer than you planned

We have had guests book three nights and stay seven. The region rewards slow travel. The more time you give it, the more it gives back. If you are thinking about extending your stay while you are here, talk to Mariana. If the room is available, we will sort it.

If you want a personalised list of recommendations based on your interests and the time of year you are visiting, email us before you arrive. We are happy to put one together.
